BATTEN DISEASE

Batten Disease is a fatal, inheirited disorder of the nervous system that begins in childhood, usually between the ages of 5 and 10.

Parents or physicians may notice a previously normal child has begun to develop vision problems or seizures.  In some cases the early signs are subtle, taking the form of personality and behavior changes, slow learning, clumsiness, or stumbling.

Over time, affected children suffer mental impairment, worsening seizures, and progressive loss of sight and motor skills.  Eventually, children with Batten Disease become blind, bedridden, and demented.

To date, Batten Disease is always fatal, usually by the late teens or twenties.  Batten Disease is not contagious or, at this time, preventable.  (From the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke)

We first learned about Batten Disease through The Spaide Family in Miami, FL, seen here.  We have since held an event for Batten Disease to help Erika Spaide as well as other children like her through helping to fund research.

These families always need help.  Please click on the "Erika Spaide" page at left to learn more.

Thank you.
